DDr Pad trouble

I have a really crappy pad, and is wondering what to do with it. I don't want to go out and spend so much money for the red octane pads (even though they are pretty sweet). I was thinking of putting a wooden or metal board at the back so it doesn't bend so much, then put boards on the x,o/\, and square, so I can tell where the arrows are( ya know, if I shift over a bit)
