Re: Style Ranking (Profile Feature)
If you want people to know what style you play, you have multiple spots in your profile where you could specify which style you prefer/use.
I can think of no reason to make an actual coded rank system for styles. If you're the best two fingers, one toe and a stick player in the game, but your overall ranking is still 50,000th, I don't think you should be at the top of a list.
If you can't get better than most at your style, either be content to not be better than most, or work on a different style.Comment

Re: Style Ranking (Profile Feature)
Yes I know you can mention it in your profile but it would be more of a convenience if it was a coded feature. If you happen to come across someone that is good and ask for advice(what songs did you play, what speed mods do you use, etc.) and then find out they have a different playing style it seems like a waste.
It doesn't have to rank people, it would just separate people into groups. And I doubt anyone plays with a stick lmao.Comment

Too bad too many people will put themselves at 1 hand just to make them look better.

If you're going to accost a random stranger for help in getting better, "what style do you use" seems like a logical first question to me.Yes I know you can mention it in your profile but it would be more of a convenience if it was a coded feature. It does according to the OP who is trying to get some silly percentage worth of support for his idea.It doesn't have to rank people, it would just separate people into groups. And I doubt anyone plays with a stick lmao.Comment

Re: Style Ranking (Profile Feature)
Didn't bother to read replies to the thread...
This is a complete waste of time. I play spread AND index where's my ranking? I could easily play some songs one handed and get on that list.
I saw the words regional ranking. This would be NOTHING like that. This is a crap way to say that you're X rank of the ONE HANDERS.
FFR was made to play your own way. But that doesn't mean your own way should be seperated from the rest.

Re: Style Ranking (Profile Feature)
Short response: yes, I like the idea and would like to see it done. I'm using Zageron's thread now, but something more official would be nicer. I have my doubts as to whether it *will* be done though.
Longer response with explanations of my view:
I like the idea, and since they already do a variety of rankings, hopefully it wouldn't be a stress on the system to add some others. If it's done using a profile entry like regional rankings, of course people can lie to make themselves look better, but they can already do that with regional rankings and I don't remember people complaining about that.
True, in general how well you play the game, regardless of style, is one of the main things people are interested in. But there are multiple ways to measure this -- grand totals, average or individual song ranks, and the newer tier point stats. A number of things can affect how well you play, and style is one of them. I think it's a factor that's worth considering.
Often when someone asks how to get better, many responses say switch to playing with two hands. It's commonly accepted that you can get better faster playing two-handed and that one-handed players are at a disadvantage, hampering their ability to reach the very top ranks. It's my understanding (but I could be wrong), that the best one-handers are usually noticeably behind the best two-handers. If there's such a strong division between two or more playing styles, why not offer a way to distinguish between them in the rankings? Maybe you're not a top player overall, but are one of the top in your particular playing style. Would that be nice to know? I think so, which is why I joined the list in Zageron's thread. Similar to the way regional rankings tell you how good you are compared to people in your local area of the world, this ranking would tell you how good you are compared to others who play the game in the same way you do. Yes, there is potential to do all sorts of stats for comparison -- age groups, membership duration (how long you've played), games played, etc. -- but we wouldn't and shouldn't consider everything, just the ones that many people want to see. If this has enough support, it may be worth considering to satisfy the user demand.
As for changing styles, typically people will do this to improve more and/or faster, which I believe usually means going from one-handed to two-handed. You might get worse when you first make the switch, but if you stick with it, you should get better. I've heard this a lot, so it seems to be commonly accepted as fact, as far as I can tell. Therefore, people who switch shouldn't end up playing worse than they did before. They should improve and get into an appropriate place in the rankings of the new style. And if for some reason you really did get worse, wouldn't you just go back to your old style and have an appropriate ranking again? If you frequently switch styles, well, that's harder to know how to place; maybe pick what you use most often? I didn't think that was commonly done.
So while I like the idea, I'm not sure it will get implemented. I just have this feeling that either it won't get enough support or the admins will veto it for some reason. Zageron's thread may be the best we can do, but I guess we'll see.Last edited by Dronak; 09-6-2007, 08:42 PM.
