How 'bout an instant replay button so users can see where they went wrong so they can get it the next time?

Re: Instant Replay
I record my plays with Hypercam 2 and then play it back to see the mistakes. It's essentially the same thing, except you actually have more control. Plus, I've had a couple times where I started a level up the first time, hit record to nail the first mistake I make, and ended up AAAing the song, resulting in a AAA on video. If your computer can handle it, I recommend it.Comment

Re: Instant Replay
Hypercam lags massively for most people, so only a few can actually do this with good results. Also, most screen cutters can't see their PA, so recording with Hypercam wouldn't be at all beneficial to them either.I record my plays with Hypercam 2 and then play it back to see the mistakes. If it's not too hard to implement, and isn't too intensive on the server, I'd really like this. :)Comment

Re: Instant Replay
Good point. For some reason, I overlooked the fact that it'd need to somehow be recorded in real-time for it to be able to play back. This definitely would be too much for FFR.Comment

Re: Instant Replay
meh. it makes it more of a challenge i think to not know Exactly where you screwed up. just adds a tiny tiny bit to the fun. and fun-ness is always good. also seems too server intensive. it would easier just to give out a picture of the step charts or somethin. and look at those.Comment

Re: Instant Replay
this would be highly server intensive... unbelievably so.
but, beyond that, i like the concept of it... i think it'd be a really neat and unique feature to offer... IF it were ever to be done, it'd be a feature that would have to be turned on. Also, it sounds perfect for a subscribers only feature.RIPComment

Re: Instant Replay
How about the same concept, but rather than saving and storing videos, have a one video restriction.
Basically:
- Before playing a song, there could be a "replay" check box within the options area, where the speed mods are and all.
- You play the song you want, replay records.
- At the result screen, text box pops up asking if you would like to view the replay. If yes is selected, it links you to a video player which you are able to view your replay. If no is selected, video is discarded.
- After you've watched the replay, if a replay is stored already, the check box becomes disabled. You must delete the replay before recording another. You could also set some sort of expiration date in which replays are deleted to cut down the amount of replay data stored, especially if users become inactive and have a replay recorded.
One replay per person with the requirement of deleting shouldn't be too server intensive, and still functions as good as having many replays, just with a bit more hassle.
I don't think replays have any purpose other than looking for mistakes and correcting them. Even if someone wanted to use the replay as a brag, if they did well, it would have no sound. No point in allowing replays to be permanently stored.
As for availability, I also agree with Tass and this should only be a subscriber feature. Once again, this would cut down the server load with this, and could be easily managed.
Any ideas, thoughts?Last edited by scottish; 10-25-2007, 02:18 AM.Comment

Re: Instant Replay
they should have the song's sound... that would seem to be important.
and holy hell... if you were able to tap into a webcam or microphone to get the keytap audio. that would be super sweet.RIPComment

Re: Instant Replay
Well considering it's running in flash, I'm sure it could be able to capture from a microphone. Making it all work at once is to ensure sync is what the problem would be.
Recording the song should be easy. While loading, the data of the song that is selected could be sent to the replay feature, which should be able to playback the .mp3 of which song is being played. If you combine that with accessing a microphone, or web cam, you could basically then have a full sound/key tap/video which would be awesome. I don't know how intensive coding would be for this, but as far as I know, it's possible.Last edited by scottish; 10-25-2007, 02:52 AM.Comment

Re: Instant Replay
The way I would go about this would be to save the exact timing to an array and then have the playback trigger the keypresses from this array. This would make each 'film' about 5-10kb in size but would take a little work in the flash code and probably a special 'player' flash app available through stats or profile stats or something.
