probably been proposed before and likely to be impossible at this point anyway: practice mode, a la guitar hero? ability to play one 10 second passage or so, maybe even bring down the bpm, but the main thing is the starting in the middle of the song and playing small segments easily so whorring songs would be unneccessary. i wouldn't care if we couldn't get credits playing songs this way, just like in gh.
