Of what programmed nature are the bots that we frequently see in the forums?

Assuming that they advertise only by making a new thread and spamming links, you could require a certain postcount (even 1 might work) before a member is able to create their own thread. The bot, which is normally not programmed to advertise other than as its first action (the thread), will be powerless.

Of course, this method applies only if the bots are wired the way I described...

My idea was to require one post before being able to post a link. Spamvertizers are stopped dead, since they never make more than one post, and anyone who legitimately wants to link to something in their first post shouldn't be too bothered by being required to make ONE post before being able to do so.

I'm pretty sure Sleepywood.net's forum has exactly that and they are vb as well. It's definitely possible.
