Those that are better are most likely more active in the community, and most likely you'll hear and see much more good players than bad ones.

I think the middle of the pack players (active only) would be listed somewhere between D1 and D2

What I do when i try to AAA(may not work at that well for lower levels though) is play a few levels higher than the one i want to AAA.
ex. If i want to AAA a 7, I normally play 8-9 level songs, than when i play the 7 it's much easier since I got used to playing really hard songs.
