Start an IRC Server, or get a channel on Freenode

IRC is old, yes, but it really is one of the best platforms for group chats. You don't have to deal with a clunky flash application embedded in a webpage, and there's a ton of flexibility on several fronts (there could be a web applet for it on the FFR website, people can use the client of their choice and customize it, there are great moderation tools, etc.).

So yeah. Please consider it, Synth.

I think that people may tend to flock to the site-based chats out of pure convenience. It's like people using facebook chat instead of other IM tools/clients because.. well, why not? As long as the chat is serving the purpose, and everyone just happens to be there.

I'm a fan of IRC though, and I'd love if #kbo was more populated and/or #ffr was established.

I don't see a problem with having an IRC channel to use so long as the chats (profile and video chat) are down.

I've established a channel on the Honk-Honk IRC Network. Either click here or use irc.honk-honk.org as the server and #ffr as the channel.

Should the chat stay up after everything is up and going again is entirely up to the decision of all the other staff. I'll lend a helping hand for now, though!

The only thing I'd watch out for on IRC channels is ****ty opers who leave their servers vulnerable. I know rizon got rooted recently, probably bc they run all of their processes as root. For any people unwise enough to use the same IRC password as FFR password, that's a pretty extreme vulnerability.

Coincidentally, I just got done setting up a charybdis tip release on my server, so I might config everything to run an FFR room. This would give us the advantage of being opers so we can *line jerks instead of just banning them. Running the network would also allow us to configure IRC over SSL to get around the plaintext vulnerabilities of IRC.
We must know. We will know.

Just my opinion, but I think IRC is much better than prochat could ever be. Video chat is different, of course.

Anyways, thanks for setting this up.

Actually, I am an operator on the network I'm hosting #ffr on, so I'm set on that.

SSL for that network is available on ports 6697-6999, and 9000.
Normal IRC connections can be made on ports 6660-6667.

Yep, on SSL now. Nice network.
