100x better, but more boring

I have always played 1.50x speed, I guess this is why I'm so good at mashing through most songs lol, so to fix this I'm trying to work on normal speed with the half screen thing. I like the half screen cause it takes the pressure off "good!,boo!" etc but I find slow kind of boring over all.

Is there another way to practice becoming less of a masher, advice besides playing 23 hours a day? because I'm already playing a lot recently.

I don't really want to get into stepmania, not sure why it's much more popular.

edit: lol actually obvious why, but I've grown up on FFR!

It seems to me that dropping to 1.0x would only increase your mashing, because it would make all the notes drop on you in one solid chunk.

jack up the speedmod as high as you can comfortably read (likely about 1.75x-2.0x); that gives you more 'visual room' in which hitting each arrow gives a perfect, thus allowing you to judge the timing of notes more easily.

practice on easy songs as well; focus on getting AAAs on easy things and work your way up and it'll give you the right skills to have good accuracy on higher level songs as well

Keep the speed around 1.5+, and turn on combo masking if it just pressures you.

if you want to become "less of a masher" you have several options

1. you could use stepmania to improve accuracy
like anything new, it'll take some getting used to and time to adjust to, but it's well worth it

2. you can increase the speed mod
this way you'll be able to read patterns better preventing you from mashing mushy parts in songs

3. instead of screen cutting to get rid of the goods, averages, boos etc like dingleberry said, there's an easier alternative - simply turn on combo masking

lol decreasing speed and screen cutting is the same as putting it at 1.5 normally. i, too, had a problem with slow speed, so, naturally, i sped it up. seemed to work for me. i'm at 2.0x :P
