What is the most effective way

    to play FFR?

Currently im doing the standard up down left right, but i hear that all the really good players play spread, like sd kl

what do you play? And what do you find most effective?

I have found most efficiency and comfort out of playing with the keys AS;'. It's spread only really spread across the keyboard, it's a lot more comfortable and better on your arms to have them more parallel to each other than perpendicular in cases like using keys DFJK for spread. Also in spread you're using your middle and index fingers.

            Spread.
Just pick any keys you are comfortable with [as long as your keyboard can register all 4 keys at once, even though this is really only required on the hard songs, it's nice to be able to use the keys your used to on every song].
Doesn't take too long to get used to, you just start off really bad then pick up really quickly, after a few days of playing like it you'll have it down much better than when you started.

Also, would it be smarter to hone my skills by practicing one song? Or starting at the easiest and just doing every song from there on out?

To improve, I generally play songs in a range above my ability to PA easily. For me, this would be high VCs or higher; it varies from person to person. However, if I play songs far above my ability, I usually end up mashing instead of delibarately trying to PA.

Songs with patterns that are giving you problems while playing spread are the ones you should play rather than avoid. Working on your weak points right off the bat helps greatly. Such as files with one handed trills, jumpstream, and speed files.

                        yeah this

as the standard for quality increases more and more you're going to find less and less files that cater to only one strength or have only one main type of pattern. a stepmania professional can handle any pattern with equal ease. you are a stepmania professional

In Stepmania I do zx 2(numpad) 3(numpad). But on FFR it doesn't support those numpad keys. I do play index sometimes though...

you could try my odd style of spread. ML2(numpad)6(numpad).

That is how i progressed from the arrow keys. lol.
