Currently I'm able to do songs that are "Challenging" pretty well now. I tried stepping up to the Very Challenging songs, and I completely bomb on them. I've been practicing at the VC songs for a few weeks now, and I'm not really seeing any improvement on my part.

Re: Tips for Very Challenging songs?
Either play easier songs until you get better at them and then go back to harder songs or play harder stuff and then VCs will seem easy.Comment

Work on the specific patterns you have problems with. Watch the replay to the point where you mess up if you have to. Oh and play stepmania.

Re: Tips for Very Challenging songs?
If you're playing one-handed or index, don't forget that you can slide over the keys to hit multiple arrows with one press.
You may want to look into a keyboard or key setup that allows you to register all four at once, to make sliding and mashing more reliable.
If there's a particular pattern messing you up, take a screenshot of it to see what's going on there.
Make sure the speedmod is as high as you can comfortably read. The faster it is the more notes space out and thus patterns are easier to make out.Patashu makes Chiptunes in Famitracker:

Re: Tips for Very Challenging songs?
Play songs that have a lot of specific patterns. If you are struggling with trills, play a song with trills that happen quickly and frequently. If speed is your problem, play a song with extremely speedy runs (since you are working on VCs, Purple might be a good bet for you since it too is a VC). If jumps are what you want to work on, pick a song with REALLY fast jumps. The list can go on.Comment

Re: Tips for Very Challenging songs?
I've noticed a VERY large difficulty gap between Challenging -> VC, and an even larger one from VC -> FMO.
As people above me have said, the best way to get better is to play a step above what you think you can achieve. You might not be FCing anything, but your pattern sense will improve, and you'll make progress fairly rapidly.
Just keep up the good work, and you'll see an improvement!
