I play like that all the time and if you just tilt your keyboard a bit it wont hurt your hands at all. But I really do suggest moving to spread.

I use my hotkeys set to

D = left
Y = up
Home key = right
num lock = down

and I only use both my thumbs and my right pinky. Is that unique?

To be exact, i use right thumb for arrow down, right index arrow up, right middle arrow right, and left middle for left. although i generally use left middle for left and left pointer for down which is kinda generic. my thumb comes in for streams usually

I haven't heard of this style before, but I can't imagine it's that new. Whatever works for you, though.
