If you have a conductor, though, timing when you change notes with his/her hands is the equivalent of timing when to hit an arrow by watching it go up/down a screen. There is visual feedback here.

    edit: merged posts.

anyway, tennis makes me suck at ping pong. ping pong makes me suck at tennis because of the major differences in swing speed/style/racquet and paddle weight/movement/etc. i think musical ability helps FFR ability moreso.

It depends mostly on transition in grip style and footwork. Personally, I find them somewhat the same. It differs from person to person, of course.

The primary aural-coordinative difference between FFR and instruments is that in the former, the game plays the music/rhythm for you; your job is to follow it. In the latter, however, you play the music/rhythm, and, with the exception of having a metronome, there is no reference for timing other than your own sense of beat.

When I read music now...I wish it was like FFR or Beatmani IIDX or something. Seriously...I could read my music much better if it had a similar setup.

Also remember that StepMania broken thing? That guy MAY actually be legit as I've seen his piano playing...I shat myself when I saw it.

FFR helps me play piano and viola!
And the same goes for piano and viola help me play FFR.
I am geting somewhat "practice" on all 3 from any of the 3.
But I still need to learn music and stuff, it is just easier.
My life is layered Piano, Viola, FFR.
Then again I have a friend who plays piano and viola and he sucks at FFR, he don't play much but I got real good real fast.
This is almost like a poem.
The way I space each sentence.
          Lol.

          Lol.

Nice one, forgot about that. If you played your notes based on the positioning of the conductors hands then you probably would be improving your ability to differentiate notes at high speed. If he had four positions and you used the same four fingers for those positions as you do in FFR then I'm sure you could improve the direct relationship between fingers and positioning. Heh that might make for a cool game if it were simulated on the computer.... However, because the finger position isn't the same, timing arrows has it's differences from timing a conductor's hands, and you have to play by recognizing patterns on some fast songs, the timing of both is not equivalent.

lol. and uhm, i guess i didn't meant "directly related" THAT literally, fido. (as in piano skill is always directly proportional to FFR skill or anything) piano skill proves nearly nothing about SM or FFR skill; i was merely saying that there are a lot of common skills needed for both, along with, of course, distinct differences. they help each other, basically. that "broken SM" thing was definitely fake.

I'd like to say that having played an instrument for 16 years makes me better at ffr. Unfortunately, it only makes me better at hitting arrows with the beat.

You don't actually have to read notes quickly when playing the piano. You would most likely have the song memorized, or only have to glance at sheet music every once in a while.

And as said before, playing an instrument can strengthen your fingers, increase timing, help with trills, etc.

I played the flute for 7 years. Because you can't read every note on its own with a fast piece of music, I have learnt to think in patterns. In mine opinion, that's the same thing with the arrows, there are different patterns, that you have to learn, so that you can play fast.

Agreed, nothing can get as simple as that by means of explanation.

By the way, I can only see pianos actually doing some work with your fingers because when you play wind instruments you have to work: your air pressure amount, reading scales, and amount of lip pressure(already taking key fingerings into consideration). These 3 key things help decline the amount of time it takes to work on finger sustainability.

I think it does, it helps me hit the notes more on the beat and you have a better sense of rythem and tempo but also it strengthens your fingers too
