response to stuff in ledwix's thread

widgets are awful and worthless bits of code. all they do is recruit more myspace ******s who like ****ty music. the new forum layout is bad too, and basically every feature on the main page is terrible. the game is as fun as it can be with the limits set, but overall ffr is pretty ****ty right now.
ok so i made a post (above) in ledwix's thread about active members decreasing. it wasn't well worded, had poorly structured sentences and was probably not the best way of getting my point across, so i'll explain my statements here.

some of the things that are pretty ignorant, such as "every feature on the main page is terrible, but i was in a rush and bad mood. not that that excuses what i said, but it was a factor. i'm not dumb, i know FFR is business and more viewers equals more money, and myspace is a great place to recruit users. ok, that's great i guess, more people playing the game. but is myspace really the best place to go to recruit users? how many sexually frustrated teenagers does one site need? frankly, the pool or users who would make good regulars is rather dry.

i know plenty of people who frequent myspace, and a few of them have actually commented on the ffr widgets to me. however, none of the people i know to view any of the widget band's myspace pages would be good members of FFR. they would probably register, play the game a bit, and maybe add a little information to their profiles. they wouldn't click the ads, they wouldn't post on the forum and they surely wouldn't subscribe. sure they add to your hit-count, but the effect is so minimal it's almost worthless. what i'm getting at is that from what i've seen, the majority of myspace users would add nothing to the ffr community and provide almost no additional revenue.

ffr is largely (i'd say nearly completely) community based. users who don't add to the community are worthless to me, which led me to the first two sentences of the above post. also adding to the two sentences is my dislike of the music (sksk etc.), files and look. i'm aware that the files are easy for a reason. i'm pretty sure the majority of you admins and at least some of the regulars dislike the myspace rock bands. jasonkey, you call the myspace bands "bigger and better", and sure, scary kids scaring kids is much "bigger" then DM Ashura, in the sense that they have a larger fan base. but better? better for what? listening? better for using to recruit their fans as members? or better for implementing into the game? which i assure you their music is not. is the quality of the game more important then the quantity of members? to you it is the members, but you should take some time to consider what is best for the game, and by some i mean more then you are as of now. almost anyone who plays stepmania can tell you that a scary kids scaring kids song is not exactly a prime song for a rhythm game, not to mention the fact that the file added will be of an extremely easy difficulty. note that my bias against the music is not the reason i say this, i'd be the first to tell you that no lil wayne song would make for a good stepfile.

about the forum layout, i don't like it but it isn't terrible. it is what it is, so whatever. what i meant by "the game is as fun as it can be with the limits set" was nothing bad. ffr is fun, has appealing graphics, speedmods are awesome, and there are a lot of great songs and files in the game.

so i ask you synth/tass/ld, does quality really deserve to take a back seat to quantity? is myspace really the best place to use as your main recruiting source? since the first widget realase has there been a substantial increase in the rate of new member registration? increase in revenue?

now. if i still seem to be off the mark, if i still seem to not understand, could you please take the time to explain? if you read this, thanks, i know it's long tl;dr etc..

tl;dr - explanation of the top post/expansion on it. jumps around a bit because i was going back into paragraphs and adding stuff, my class just ended so i dont have time to re-read it all and make it flow. sorry. go back and read it.

Re: response to stuff in ledwix's thread

have you noticed the site running slow over the past week or so? that's because we had a FIFTY PERCENT increase in traffic in the past WEEK. we're a site that is 5 years old, has hundreds of thousands of hits a day... we we jumped 50% in a WEEK. that's widgets.

all i really see is complaints based upon who you think the widgets will draw to the community, that they're worthless, and that the songs aren't great for stepping. 50% traffic increase is far from worthless, so that really shuts up every question you've brought up. content of the game is my responsibility... and i'm well aware that most of these bands aren't amazing in terms of ability to make unique and cool and hard files. so what? FFR is about music promotion. The game is that medium to do it. Just because something doesn't fit with out longstanding userbase's opinion on what works doesn't mean it won't be exactly what our new members are looking for. Not to mention, most of those files will never be released on FFR.

By bigger and better, Jason references mainstream. Bands that you can hear on the radio. Bands that will drive traffic even higher.

Also... everyone bitched about profiles when they first came out. Profiles gave a 500% increase to traffic in about 2 weeks time when they were released, and we've grown every month since then. I see widgets in the same light... people bitch now, but give it another month or two to once again prove that we aren't retarded and we know what we're doing.

The bottom line: widgets will allow us to do things with the site that we couldn't do before. Content wise. for the userbase that we love so much and yet always wants to take shots at us.

Re: response to stuff in ledwix's thread

          ^ What Tass said! ^

My reference to bigger and better bands actually in no way is representative to my tastes in music. So don't confuse my endorsement of the bands that are coming into FFR as something along those lines. (Trust me, most folks have never even heard of the bands I listen to).

What I AM saying is that widgets allow FFR to reach out to MORE THAN myspace folks, but to bands and musicians we couldn't interface with before, and yes, bring in more users to the community that may OR MAY NOT participate in the community.

However, don't make assumptions as to what these users do. What would surprise you is how many users daily play FFR the Game and never even log in. I would have to check the real numbers again, but it has even exceed the number of logged in users on occasion. So assuming that opening FFR up to a broader audience is a negative is flat out wrong. I do understand the feeling that the fun, insular community is changing and change is EBIL, but this is the web and the net. Evolve, change or die.

We do the best we can to balance what we do, and provide for all the disparate cliques within FFR. The reality is this effort will rarely be enough to please everyone.. ever never ever .

You can, however, be assured that we ARE very carefully watching after the community and we have NOT forgotten where we have come from.

That said, FFR will move forward and widgets are only 1 aspect of that. In the coming days, you folks will see additional examples of that. We are not sitting still.

Thanks for clarifying your thoughts g4z33b0, as that original statement was simply flinging mud.

Re: response to stuff in ledwix's thread

Not sure if my opnion counts but I wanted to throw it in anyways. Soory if it pisses anybody off.

I have noticed a huge increase in young girls posting pictures of themselves in bathing suits who never play FFR and basicly use it as a dating site. I would really hate for the FFR profiles to turn into some wacked kind of myspace. I have also seen many new players on FFR who play alot, quite well, and are very nice people. Is there some way to mod the profiles who never play and just post pictures of themselves? I'm really sick of going into an mp room to watch two people play but they aren't playing, their cybering instead.

And on the band note, I understand the widgets and have no problem with those. I enjoy some of them for example the Skindred ones because they are one of my favorite bands. The only thing I'm not so happy about is it seems like 99% of the new songs introduced into FFR are crappy rock or funk songs. Where are the good dance, classic, and arcade songs that we all love so much? I realize that we need new members but what if the lack of good music being introduced drives some of FFR's best or most frequest players to leave or not play as often.

Re: response to stuff in ledwix's thread

When you need to contact the band for permission to use their songs, and that genre of band are the most readily contactable and the most eager for anything that will increase their exposure, then that's who you get.

DrugstoreCowboy is playing to his strengths. You see how many of the widget bands are from Michigan? He's done -amazing- work getting artist permissions, and who can blame him for going out of his way to contact bands that he knows, and likes? When you are genuinely a fan of someone's work, you are pretty much necessarily going to have a better chance to convince them to work with you. The enthusiasm shows clearly.

Nothing is stopping anybody from going and contacting any band they care to. I have some connections in the Canadian metal scene, and I've been poking around a little, trying to pin down some contact info for some of the independant metal labels around. Anyone here who is dissatisfied with the type of music coming into FFR via widgets can contact bands they -do- like, and see what they think.

songs go into funk when they are subscriber only. they aren't actually funk songs....

if people are cybering in MP, contact an admin and we'll ban them. you can send me an IM, i'm here almost always.

if girls are posting pictures in bathing suits.... who cares? let them do their thing, you do your thing. as long as there isn't nudity it shouldn't be an issue. our goal is to make this site have something for everyone. if they feel the need to waste the main portion of this site, the game, and just use the site as myspace.... they're missing out, but they're still taking advantage of something we offer.
