There's nothing wrong with mashing, I did it all the time a long while back. It doesn't make you worse, it just doesn't really make you better either.

As long as it's not all you're doing on every song it's fine.

my advice just download steps or recreate them on stepmania and practice them there, i'm an index and non mash my best rank is 1.4k while compared to my rank of mashing which is about 13k.

The only gain I see from mashing is more exercise for your fingers in comparison regular playing.

EHHS is also a song I can't do yet in the half year I've been playing this game. I mash a little (< lawl), but I figure it doesn"t matter so long as a keep practicing lower level songs.

I don't know if this will help, but what I did is whenever I'd lose my combo I would fail on purpose and each time I would play the song again I would try to patch up some problems I have on that certain part of the song and keep going until I would eventually end up with a FC.

What worked for me was to find a simfile of EHHS for SM, so that I could hear exactly what the right rhythm is. Then when I went to go play it again, I was able to read the beginning and end a LOT better (improved by 2,000-something ranks). The middle parts, though, may still have to be a mashfest for you because it's just a whole lot of jumpstream.

Nonetheless, if you're just looking to improve your rank, then I would really get to know the precise rhythm.

Edit: I just remembered there's an EHHS v2 token. Play that if you want, too, because it shows the rhythm a lot clearer as well. I would still recommend finding a simfile for SM, though, because you can Assist Tick to hear it.
