Sometimes I tap my foot in time with the music, but it doesn't always help. I think it depends on the step file and how good I am at each particular song.
I tend to do that, too. When I can't do well on the middle level songs I'm working on, I switch to really hard songs that I expect to do pooly on. When I do, it's what I expected, and when I somehow manage to improve my personal best, it's a pleasant surprise. Many times, playing those really hard songs makes my hand/arm get tired or sore pretty fast, so I have to stop playing for a while (which is often the rest of the day), and I don't go back to the easier songs. So I'm not sure how much it would help, but I'd say it's worth a try.
