I've played FFR for long enough to have learned the intrinsic advantages to spread vs other positions, but I'm having a difficult time deciding which layout to stick with. Currently I use two: [ m , . / ] and [ z x . / ].
I see advantages to the former in that my hands stay close together, so it feels more like a contiguous input (making trills/jacks a bit easier). This is also the position with which I started spread, so I've got a tendancy to fall back to it because I know it's worked in the past.
The latter position, z-/, seems like it is more ergonomic. I don't fidget with my hand position as much, and don't have a problem with my wrists getting tired from holding an awkward position. I would venture to guess that after a few days of practice, this would seem as natural (where trills and jacks are concerned) as the previous position did.
Before I acclimate myself to a new (and hopefully semi-permanent) layout though, I'd like to learn a bit more about other positions. In other topics I've read recommendations of left/down arrows, along with numpad 8 and 6 (I believe, could be wrong). That sounds intriguing, but when I tried it, it seemed a bit awkward....perhaps I misinterpretted the poster. I've heard yet others say things like q/w/o/p.
Talk to me about how layouts make things easier for you.
