I played 3-finger for about 5 months and was pretty alright, but not improving much. I wanted to switch over to 4-finger or spread but I couldn't get used to it. So one day I decided I was giving up on 3-finger and played 4-finger only for a week or so. After that I was still worse than I was with 3-finger but improving, then I switched to spread and beat every single one of my 3-finger scores within a few days.
Switch to spread and stick to it. I can't even play 3-fingered anymore, it now feels awkward and spread feels natural. You just need to adapt, which takes time.
I can play either with one or two hands. I prefer using one hand though I am much better with two. Despite my improvement I've never actually gotten comfortable with two hands.
Oh, and I pride my self on the ability to pass most songs one-handed, I can even pass EHHS (That's *pass* not "Do well on"). There are no songs that I can FC with two hands that I can't with one, just songs that I can get much better combos on.
Trust me on this one spend two solid days playing with two hands ONLY. Get use to it and play harder songs that you cant pass. Get use to button mashing with two hands before you do the easier songs. I improved on the hard songs first and then the easy songs. With two hands I am twice as good as i was with one hand. I try playing with one hand now and there is a huge difference.
Practice Practice Practice and you will get better. Two hands kills one hand.
i personnaly belive that index is the best way, as long as you have the finger speed. because you have only two fingers to worry about, you can be more on beat and if you play on the numpad you can even do crossovers.

Find me an indexer than can get a reasonable combo on EHHS.
Spread > index in FFR.

Well what do I call what I do? Right Hand:Middle and ring only. Left Hand: Index and sometimes, but very rarely, middle. I can play index really good but only on the numpad because of DDR. But I really think that playing spread is the best way to go on like Masters or on SM like over 13 feet.
