Taking Breaks from Playing a Benefit to Getting Better

I've been a member of the site for 9 years but only in the last few months have I been playing consistently. I did MP with another member about a month or so ago (I wanna say Squid?) and being a scrub at this game asked that player for some tips to improve my game.

One of their recommendations was to not play daily.

I don't take that advice to a T but will maybe play for a few days and step away for the same amount. When I come back, seeing notes seem so much easier and my fingers just do the work without hesitations on patterns I may have struggled with days before.

Anyone else do this? Or do you feel that the pure grind just makes you better?

This unfortunately doesn't work for me. I'm now trying to get back months worth of effort i put in. If it works for you though, go for it.

A day or two usually works for the don't play daily advice. More than a week or two it drops more likely than not.

Let nature run her course and if you gotta take an FFR dump, then may your scores be as perfect as green.

Different things work for different people. It never hurts to try that method or maybe just limit yourself to a certain number of plays per day if the itch to smash your keyboard gets to be too much~

Something that's been working for me lately is just varying the songs I've been playing on a day-to-day basis and setting mini-goals for myself. (such as getting an FC on a file or play a more difficult file through until the end)

If I take breaks from playing, it's usually no longer than a day (that pesky itch gets the best of me when I try to go longer).

Re: Taking Breaks from Playing a Benefit to Getting Better

Grinding definitely works better, but you have to grind in a very specific way: songs which aren't too difficult or too easy.

                Here's how I grind:
                1) Filter all songs at a level, suppose level 40
                2) Queue all songs and save it in the manager
                3) Play all level 40 songs twice.
                4) Move up to level 41.

You'll almost always level up by 1 level if you do this. Sometimes you'll only need to do all the songs once to level up, sometimes you'll need to do it a max of 3 times. But it's one of those guarantee-grinding techniques that ensures leveling up. On average it takes around 2 hours of continuous grinding to go up 1 level.

Also, try not to restart any songs to FC them. It's mostly a waste of time. If you don't FC it, just keep moving along.

In the morning or next day you might notice that you perform worse, and you might have to move back 1 level to warm up.

The biggest waste of time is doing anything beyond your level. I consider >20 misses or >100 boos consistently would mean that you're playing at a level that is too high. Songs where you get 0~20 misses and 0~50 boos is the best level to improve your level. Mashing is unproductive.

If you have a whole weekend to play FFR, you could probably level up 10-15 if you play it all day. I'm not sure about the higher levels though.
