Re: does ffr make you smarter
"Does FFR make you smarter?"
I would say yes... and no, but there are two main issues I see here:
1. What is FFR? Is it simply playing the game, or does the full functionality of the website come into play? If so, then you have to consider the social aspects: the forums, teams, tournaments, profile interactions... there's a lot to it.
2. What is "smarter"? I tend to believe that "smartness" or intelligence, is something that is more difficult to lose than it is to gain. Given that, almost any task one performs while playing the game or interacting with others on the site can be seen as practice, i.e. learning. If you accept that through this learning, one gains intelligence, then it must be that one does in fact become smarter. This is not to say that FFR is significant, however, because a similar argument can be made for nearly everything.
Now, if I'm not taking the question so literally, I would like to say first that, in my experience, intelligence has no significant meaning. I use the word to express a vague idea, meaningful only to me, that probably has more to do with social norms than anything else.
Second, I believe that habitually listening to music correlates to low intelligence, so I don't really appreciate that aspect of the game. I am glad, however, that for those who do listen to music habitually, the game adds a level of mental activity that would otherwise not be present in the typical passive-listening activity.
Third, this is a video game. I suspect that, overall, video games have a small correlation with lower intelligence because of the nature of the activity. It requires a large investment of free time, and provides a sense of achievement for those who lack achievement in their real lives. Video games also provide users with a sense of anonymity that is counter-productive to the development of normal social behaviors.
Therefore, when you combine music and video games, I think you're really scraping the bottom of the barrel...
That said, the people I've met here are really top notch. Despite what I would expect from what I've said above, everyone here is pretty awesome.
