If you want to play and learn without thorough analysis however, a slower jumpstream song or a simpler jumpstream pattern (e.g. maybe a jump at every second 4th beat) will make this a slightly less confusing endeavor.

Simply put, take things one step at a time. You'll get there soon, KaBlammo.

Once you do recognize jumpstream patterns well enough that you don't need to consistently rely on the song, and rather on visual cues, then you should really look into Reincarnate's advice of looking closer to the arrow receptors, and hitting according to what you see rather than trying to interpret the patterns. This is especially true on very fast and dense files.

Yeah it's definitely reading the jumpstreams and reacting to them while not losing my momentum on the song that gets me. The more songs I play with jumpstreams the more I'm hitting the actual jump steps. Still working on keeping my combo up.

What do you guys mean by receptors, by the way?

Receptors are just the four arrows on the top of the screen (bottom if you play with the downscroll mod) in which you have the scrolling arrows (i.e. the steps) align to as you hit them. Because you can't fully assume the arrows will align exactly with the music, it's better to actually see for yourself. That's why many players look close to the arrow receptors.

Idk if replays would help but that's about where I am skill-wise.
I tapped along with you and I'm in the same boat so it seems. Try taking a screen shot of different sections of the pattern and getting those down, then go back and put it all together.

That's how I did it back in the day for runningmen, at least.

Aww man...yes I am having the same problem. Jump streams are killing me right now, I will try to play this song a bit, and see what happens...

I play index right now and I have tried a little bit of spread recently, but I'm not that comfortable yet...

I still want to be able to do some JS on index...so we shall see what happens...

Maybe I will post a replay later, but probably not xD

Anyone here able to kill jump streams with index?

1.5x speedmod is very slow. Try switching to a faster speedmod, and if you can adjust well to it, you'll end up playing much better. (Back in the day, switching from 1.00 to 1.5, and then to 1.75, pretty much jumped me from D1 to D2 overnight)

I just found another good song to practice i think...

              {frozen}

It has jumps in these mini streams, so you dont have a constant stream to deal with just these mini ones =P

              or maybe runny morning(sgx)

Re: How does anyone do jumpsteps?

Ugh. No. Take that back right now. RunnyMorning is the WORST with its blue note syndrome and lots of jacking.

bmah's advice from earlier is also helpful. Jumpstreams are often the product of a stepartist choosing to emphasize a certain sound in the middle of a stream pattern. Reincarnate's advice is also helpful--if you spaz out as soon as jumps enter the equation, it's a problem with reading and not with anything physical. Most good players use a speedmod between 1.5 and 2.0

A couple of other songs that offer patterns that technically count as jumpstreams are the layered trills found in Marisa Stole The Precious Thing (a tough song and a tougher unlock), K8107 and Gravity Blast. Since these aren't like normal stream patterns that are all over the place, it's easier to focus on where the jumps are in the rhythm.

My advice is terrible but I mashed for 3 years then played SM for 1 1/2 years... annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd yeah basically just played a piss ton, Jumps were the bane of my existence for a while and it really did come down to just practise practise practise, I can't count how many 100M GTS days I did on my old account... all JS practise

But it was all worth it cause I was able to sightread for this score

Re: How does anyone do jumpsteps?

I used to have an issue with jumpstreams once. What helped a lot for me is to not even regard the file as a jumpstream at all; a lot of the times I'm playing a JS file I barely even notice it has jumps in them.

Don't think about it too much. A lot of the times, the jump will be spread over both your hands, which means that the stream basically "splits up" and plays over both hands for a moment. In case the jump plays over one hand, the pattern is basically easier (to read, and to play) because the arrows will be [12] or [34], in both cases right next to eachother in a block.

The key for me was to try and not see them as actual jumps. I'm not sure how much sense that makes though. Also, all of the above. Practise and patience are the magical words in games like this. Good luck! =3

Re: How does anyone do jumpsteps?

Just try to read it as a normal stream and stay calm. Notice where the notes are going and where the gaps are. You could try to read the jumpstream as 2 patterns intertwining. I've highlighted how you could for example read a pattern as 2 intertwining streams:

Alternatively, I sometimes read jumpstreams as 2 sides instead of all 4 receptors at once:

You'll feel more comfortable the more you play jumpstreams and learn how to read them (by separating streams or reading gaps, whichever is more comfortable for a certain pattern) and you'll eventually combine the reading methods with more complicated patterns. Key is to stay calm at all times though because nervousness will not get you anywhere. If you feel your heart racing just take a breath (even if you miss something, because missing something doesn't really matter that much when you're still learning).

edit: also, a song I used to practice a lot on was Seven. AAA'd that song (at the time a challenging) before I AAA'd any Very Difficult song lol.

Personally, I'd suggest going onto Stepmania. The are far more files to choose from there, with a lot more variety in how they're stepped. But for FFR related tips, you look like you need a speedmod increase. I watched your replays and you hit early on most of the notes. And I find I do a bit better with jumpstream when I don't focus on the stream itself, just the jumps. I can let my reactions take care of streaming, and then focus on adding in the jump to it.

If all else fails, you could try changing the direction the arrows move to. It might be harder in the beginning, but it could improve your reading capabilities in the long run. Most people play with the arrows going up by default, but I find it a trillion times easier to read with them going down.

tbh I don't even know how I hit upper-level jumpstream and handstream. Like I'll finish a song and think, "wtf did I just do and how did I do it?"

Point is, I guess, you just need to attribute it to muscle memory so you can like zone out and still FC that shit.
