Re: 2008 FFR Music Contest Voting- Round 1

hehe I'm finally reviewing the songs here

Essential Speed - Mediocre song. The bass was cool and the sound is quite raw, so it has a very intense feeling to it, which I like. Unfortunately, there was no distinct melody, drum transitions were very lacking, and there was no evidence of a climax. It felt more like a sketch than a song. Try adding more meat to your music next time.

Rainclouds - Trance, huh. I never liked trance because almost everything made was so simple. This is no exception. Though it is simple, but there are some very distinct qualities to it which separate it from other trance works. For starters, it's much softer in tonal quality, unlike most trance, which is quite hard. Drum fills were decently contructed; simple but effective. Melody wasn't too bad, but could've used more variation in rhythm to keep it going. Not bad for a trance song though.

[31545 Mix] - Beginning actually caught my attention. Synth was a little typical but the snare hits are quite cool because of it's unique rhythm. Sudden transitions were quite effective. Effects were interesting as well. Everytime a new effect came in I stood up on my seat. Even though the structure is irregular, it still feels repetitive because there is no distinct melody and because the effects used in the beginning are just being recycled. Mediocre overall.

Rocket Punch - 8-bit, sweet. The blues scale is quite nicely used, although I would've preferred to see something out of the box occasionally. Bassline is probably the best part. Drum fills were subtle but effective. Harmony near the end of the first sequence is really cool. Quite nice.

Mr. Big - I guess this is IDM? Well anyways, synths were nothing special. The sudden transitions are a bit strange. The dark, intense mood blended somewhat well with the atmospheric mood behind it, which isn't bad, since it's somewhat difficult. Add more harmonies and rhythmic variation next time to keep the song going without feeling stale.

Believe - Cyanite, this is by far your best work so far. Transitions are eerie or soothing, which allows for an effective, quick mood change. This is also the only or yours that I know of that actually has a distinct melody placed in front of the percussion. Bridge in the middle uses some sweet effects. Atmospheric reverb created a very full, filled-out feeling. Climax is intense and the entire song has a lot of energy. Now start working on making your melodies more interesting and put some chords behind it.

Play It - Odd melody, but it just may be this difference that gets it stuck in people's head. In other words, it's not a very good melody but may actually be effective. Crashes are very intense. Pads are nice, I'll admit. Melody in the middle is constructed in a mediocre fashion, but at least rhythms were varied. It doesn't add enough variation to the song though.

The Summer She Died - Very cool. Dark and cynical. There's so many things going on at the same time, and they blend very nicely behind the echo. Good job. Short and sweet.

Stripes - Below average melody, and sound was not filled out enough to bring out the chords. I can see why the ending is so abrupt, but it's just not a very effective technique, and it leaves a very messy taste in the listener's mouth.

Forgotten Summer - First melody sounded awkward because of note placement. Very chill, which is a nice feeling. Picks up later on, and the harmonies are quite nice. Especially the pitch bends. Overall, decent, but could be more interesting.

Reflections of Summer - Oh yay, my song. I'm gonna be super-critical. First of all, it's generally very poorly mastered. Converted from midi, but still sounds like midi. But I'm not a master at mastering or anything so it's okay since the main themes of the song make up for that. The string chorus is very cool, and I love it. Bongo rhythms in the beginning are somewhat awkward. General structure of the piano solo is very generic, but the chords and modulations keep it moving. Next part is kinda cheesy, but it's bright, happy, and relatively simple, so it fits the mood. Vibes provide a good shift in mood but repeats, which might get stale. Fortunately, the upper strings that come in give a powerful, full, atmospheric feeling, drawing the song up to its first climax. Guitar solo is stupid as hell. The island music section is great, but there are huge places for improvement. For starters, the bassline doesn't feel right because there's no climax or it's in the wrong place. I am unable to adjust the finer properties of the steel drums either, so it sounds more midi than anything else in the song. Chords are fine at first but just get more awkward later on. This section is also cut short, and would be much more interesting if it continued with a harmony or counterpoint melody with marimba and steel drum duet. Evening section is pretty awesome. Chords flow extremely well, and the 7ths are used incredibly effectively. However, the sax solo still has a midi feel and feels very thick and heavy. Last climax is too short and progresses a bit too fast. However, the cymbals are very intense and leave a very nice feeling when the song is finished. Symbolism is also very cool, mainly the full-circle ending. Overall it's my greatest work yet, but I got lazy in many parts. Still awesome as hell though.

Requiem to Summer Angel - Hehe vocaloid. Definitely sleepless's style of music. Melody is memorable and well constructed. Reverb in the end is epic. Transitions flowed surprisingly well. Climax was evident and resolve was very drawn out. The best part though, is the harmony, which is just so chaotic at times but so very cool. Cute, awesome job.

My 3 votes are Requiem to Summer Angel, The Summer She Died, and Reflections of Summer.
