I'm actually not quite too sure of this myself, as it's a fairly recent term that was coined not all too long ago.

I believe anchoring patterns are ones in which an arrow repeats for an extended period of time, while you simultaneously deal with other arrows. In other words, one arrow is "anchored" while you hit other arrows in different places. These patterns often feel awkward to play, but are pretty common actually.
Some examples include [34][13][34][23][34] etc. where the up arrow stays in place for the duration of this pattern.

Ok once again, I'm not 100% sure, so someone correct me right away if I'm wrong.

Basically. They're always dealing with one handed issues (like Revolutionary's [34][34][14][34][14] nonmirrored) and many times are unnecessary in FFR charts (like Tell v3, 12 Bar Bloops, Revolutionary Etude, Death Piano's ending gluts are the most extreme of the rest of the file, RATO's transitions, and many others).

Honestly, I do not understand why some people even use one handed anchors patterns in their files especially when the BPM is higher than 140. It's so stupid to use them most of the time unless if you know what you're doing. One handed anchors and Jump Chains were always considered index patterns not spread. Unless if you are making an index chart, I encourage people to not even touch these types of patterns when stepping a spread file.

This is a very funny statement because in stepmania you can abuse chord cohesion to get past anchors.

[12]2[12]2[12]2 for example, you can hit as [12][12][12][12][12][12] in stepmania and still AAA it. Another example of chord cohesion abuse is in my Last Winged Unicorn video - obviously if I tried doing that in FFR, I'd split a shitload of goods/averages and then get a lot of boos.

That's really freaking good, Chess. I've had a few runs like that myself before scoring 8 clean. (4 in the intro, another 2 before 400 because I hit a jump late.)
