The point, in my opinion, is to be able to switch between four-finger and two-finger play. Most songs can be handled with four fingers, but for fast trills and jacks, being able to switch to your strong fingers on index is ideal

I still do that, when I know the song I'm playing, like vertex and SP, I'll switch. But I use my middle fingers when I play index:P

The difference in improvement graphs would likely be something like this:

One-handed f(x) = lnx
Spread g(x) = 10lnx

(starting at x=1)
