Having your "mindstate altered" is not a bad or permanent thing, being drunk is an alternate mindstate, HELL being TIRED is an alternate mindstate. You can use alcohol and tobacco as a relative point on marijuana because laws are built on previous laws and morals. If most people believe that alcohol is ok to consume, and that tobacco is ok to smoke, then it stands to reason that marijuana would be OK considering it has never been conclusively linked to death or addiction despite consumtion by millions over thousands of years.

Alcohol was outlawed by the prohibition Izzy, moonshine, bootleggers, rum runners. They had to repeal it because they realized that the crime created by making alcohol illegal was worse than the effects of alcohol itself.

You know how you said "oh people will do marijuana and they they'll try CRACK!" wow, good job. The whole idea of a "gateway drug" is not that IT makes you want to try another drug, its that it introduces you to a drug dealer who will entice you into trying other drugs. When you go to the liquor store to buy a 6 pack they don't say "man you're a pussy! here take this 40 and a bottle of jack, drink up little buddy!" while I'd imagine some unscrupulous drug dealers would (I don't know many, but I believe this is the logic behind the idea of a gateway drug?)

If marijuana was legal, I would smoke it. I'm simply not willing to risk it right now especially when I'll be going off to college soon and if I got caught with it before going to college I'd be in deep **** with parents (college money = gone) and I wouldn't get into the college I wanted to either. Anyways, you guys should try to consider personal freedoms aswell. When I see someone who is fat, which I find utterly repulsive, I don't say "You can't eat cookies! They're bad for you! Cookies lead you to the sweets aisle, soon you'll be eating cakes! Then you'll weigh 500lbs. and need to go to food rehab, but you'll be addicted for life and you'll DIE of a heart attack!"

If someone wants to eat too much, FINE BY ME, if someone wants to smoke weed, FINE BY ME, if someone wants to smoke crack, FINE BY ME. (Of course, if I saw one of my friends being negatively affected by any of these I'd tell them to stop that ****, but all of my friends who do pot are happy for it.)

That's possibly the worst analogy you could have possibly used in that situation.

But otherwise, there aren't a lot of people who smoke cigs and think "That's not so bad, what else is out there" or have friends who say "Oh come on, you smoke cigs, heroin isn't much worse" etc. It's a different story with weed.

There aren't a lot of people who smoke weed who say that heroine isn't much worse either. Because everyone knows heroine can kill you and weed cannot. Same goes for cocaine, and methamphetamines.

In fact of all the people I know who smoke weed, I only knew one person who did cocaine, and no one who did heroine. And I know quite a few people who smoke weed because there is nothing to do in my town.
