Want to discuss song difficulties?

Posted in Flash Flash Revolution on January 4th, 20125 Comments »

WhatPic?A new year and a new subforum added to our vast library of reading/posting areas available here at FFR!!

We welcome to General Talk, the FFR Difficulty Subforum. A place dedicated to debating/deciding the difficulties of our many borderline files in-game. We would highly recommended viewing the Guidelines Sticky and other examples of acceptable posting before making any new threads, as they are checked by our moderation team before being made public for users to discuss.

If debating the actual fine lines between the existing difficulties is more your thing, there is also a place to make your suggestions to the thread for Difficulties of in game songs. These suggestions and votes will be collected and will hold weight in determining if songs get bumped up, down or remain at their current difficulty rating. So if you have an opinion, now is the best time to voice it!

Happy New Year, and have fun exploring our new subforum!!

FFR Official Tournament: Finals

Posted in Flash Flash Revolution on January 4th, 201213 Comments »

This is it – the moment everyone has been waiting for. All of the competition, the struggle, and the hype, has lead up to this moment. Those of you who have made it to this round – you have the luxury of saying that you made it to the end. You’ll also be adding at least one support token to your name, as well as a profile badge with your placement on it. There’s a lot to be proud of.

However, the fate of two Guru division players has not yet been decided. A struggle on round 7 has ended with TC_Halogen and samurai7694 in a stalemate. Both ended the round with three goods. In just 24 hours, one of them will make their first FFR official tournament final round.

Division 6 – Round 7 3rd place Tiebreaker: do i smile?
TC_Halogen vs. samurai7694

Anyone who was in the top division of the Dragons Fury tournament will more than likely wince at the mention of this question. do i smile? by t+pazolite is fairly similar to other t+pazolite songs, with a very fast pace of 250 BPM. However, it pulls a fast one by taking gradually increasing the pace from 250 all the way up past the 2000 BPM mark. It takes a speed demon to stream past 275 BPM, but to hold 320 BPM 16ths constant into a wall of quarter notes that pushes past 30 notes per second is nothing short of an act of lunacy. Credit goes to _.Spitfire._ for this brutally high For Gurus Only File.

In addition to the Guru division tiebreaker, we also have to settle a 4th place tie in the Advanced division, between The_Toymaker and supermoe1985.

Division 3 – Round 7 4th/5th place Tiebreaker: Treasure Planet
The_Toymaker vs. supermoe1985

Initially planned to be used in Division 5 of the official tournament, Treasure Planet by Renard (as Adraen) is a fast paced, level 11 difficulty file by megamon88. Treasure Planet’s chart utilizes the song’s intensity to create a very fast and overall relentless chart that features very fast streams and broken jumpstreams, as well as some occasional hard-to-hit bursts. In addition to a typical megamon chart, triples have been added for the noticeably loud cymbal crashes.

For the rest of you guys – REMEMBER: All scores for this tournament are recorded automatically. See the tournament dashboard to see how you’re doing in comparison to your opponents!

Division 1: Throwing Fire
Our remaining contenders: takumi000, DAMAN4, Escha

The Beginner division has seen a really wide range of files at the start of this tournament. When this tournament began, you opened out the tournament with a Standard level file. At round 7, you were sitting in the Challenging difficulty. Did any of you expect to make it this far after not being able to get a perfect score on the first two rounds? Look at you now – you beat out all of the perfectionists with your constant increases in skill. And now, you three will fight it out one last time, on Throwing Fire by Ronald Jenkees. Throwing Fire is a 9 on FFR’s 13 point scale. Veteran simfile author who_cares973 brings a very technical file that tests rhythmic detail and accuracy in an attempt to follow free-form synth melodies, while following an active percussion line in the background. Round 7 may have been quite a bit faster in terms of speed, but this song pushes a ton of different patterns, including some quick bursts, and triples as well. Good luck!

Division 2: Fish Hell
Our remaining contenders: reuben_tate, magicturbo, fenderg

Wow! Talk about last minute clinching! Both fenderg and magicturbo secured their positions in the final round with less than two hours to go. Because of those last minute improvements, you both get to face off against each other and reuben_tate on Fish Hell, by OSTER Project. Fish Hell is a Very Challenging rated file by megamon88 that builds on the focus of multiple techniques from last round and adds even more. While this file focuses a bit more on jacks than last round did, it also adds more length, and heavier layering too. You’ll be facing a lot more jumps this time too, not to mention a bit higher of a step count.

Division 3: SOLROS
Our remaining contenders: AD4M-V, rayword45, jgano

And we’re down to three! Congratulations to our finalists for making it to the round of three. The only things that stand in the way of you being Division 3 champion are your opponents, and SOLROS. SOLROS, by Grand Thaw is a FMO difficulty level song charted by FFR R1 simfile judge, iironiic. In an effort to close out the tournament, SOLROS swoops in and tests every skill – tons of 24th bursting, quite a few bits of 24th note trilling, a ton of complex rhythms, runningmen, bits of stream, jacks, and more. If you’re looking for any sort of technique to give yourself an advantage against your opponent, I’m sorry to inform you that there simply isn’t one – it’s a technical masterpiece.

Division 4: Music (For Kirby)
Our remaining contenders: YOSHl, yo man im awesome, DarknessXoXLight

Last round had quite a bit of argument in terms of file difficulty, with people saying that Ziergdsx’s chart for Tsugihagi Construction simply wasn’t hard enough to be a For Gurus Only difficulty. This file more than makes up for that. Music [for anything that's a pink vacuum (or to be short, for Kirby)] by Yosk! is a For Gurus Only file by FFR’s one and only bmah. This file is a considerable spike from last round, featuring a massive stream section that’s equal to about the speed of Reality, as well as some dense and long-distance jumpstream, and climaxes with one huge potentially combo-breaking difficulty spike: a ton of 16th note jacks following a repeating piano. Not so easy anymore, huh?

Division 5: Scrap Syndrome
Our remaining contenders: Stage:, MikeShinoda12345, Choofers

We’re turning down the song speed quite a bit, but increasing pattern difficulty ten-fold (not really, but this file is still pretty rough). Scrap Syndrome marks the 5th appearance of Yuuyu in FFR (and in this tournament!), and this time, Yuuyu returns to the game with a vengeance. TC_Halogen turns up the heat with a brutal For Gurus Only File that requires speed, demands burst control, and requires stamina to survive. Running over 3 minutes with 2400 steps, this file carries an average near twelve and a half notes per second. To make matters worse, there are many bursts within the file that cannot be cheated. Conquer this file, and you’re worthy of D5 champion.

Division 6: Rave7
Our remaining contenders: DossarLX ODI, leonid, (round 7 tiebreaker winner)

And then, there’s the Guru division. After Husigi Usagi Milk Tei, surely things can’t get any tougher, can they? Wrong – they can. Rave7, by DEV/NULL is a clear demonstration of when a 12 point rating simply isn’t enough. Rave7 is FFR’s 5th FSO (For Stepmen Only, level 13) file, only sitting up with the ranks of Reluctantly Accepting Overexhaustion, Death Piano, Metro, and Vertex BETA vrofl. Opening with huge streams of 200 BPM 24th runs to bring the pain, Rave7 continues to assault you 200 BPM 16th runs mixed in with various 24th and 32nd bursts, without the runs letting easily. FFR hasn’t experienced a file like this in quite some time. Credit goes to hi19hi19 for bringing a file this insane to life.

Who’s going to wind up on top? We’ll find out in just one week. Stay tuned.

We’ll have another song as a Token, so we’ll inform you in this article when it is added.

Enjoy your new year’s vacation!

6th Official FFR Tournament: Semi-Finals!

Posted in Flash Flash Revolution on December 28th, 201125 Comments »

Round 7 of the 6th Official FFR Tournament has begun. We are down to the top thirty players, or, if you only care about your division, down to the top five of each. For those of you who are still alive, congratulations on making it to the third tier of prizes! You now have FREEDOM DiVE, Vertex BETA vrofl, and now, the first LP of Low Pass Records in your possession. Things can’t possibly get any better, can they?

Well, you get to compete for another round against your four divisional rivals for one. Make the top three of your division in this round, and you’ll have serious bragging rights. How many opportunities will you have to not only say that you made it to the final round of an official tournament, but also show everyone your shiny new profile badge?

Are you snarling at your opponents now? Do you want to tear them apart limb for limb yet? If not, here’s one last enticement – make it to top three in your respective divisions and you’ll earn at least one support token, as well as a chance to duel one last time under the constraints of the official tournament for an FFR T-Shirt.

Good luck guys! You’re potentially two weeks away from victory!

REMEMBER: All scores for this tournament are recorded automatically. See the tournament dashboard to see how you’re doing in comparison to your opponents!

Division 1: Earthquake on the Southern Texas Canyon
Our remaining contenders: takumi000, Escha, akidaki, TheThong, DAMAN4

The Beginner division FINALLY hit their cracking point for AAAs last round, with a complete shut-out. Nobody snagged the perfect score. Let’s give credit to takumi000 for beating divisional favorite Escha by a mere TWO boos in the second half of the round. takumi000 has obviously found his stride, snagging the reins of this round after being 6th out of 8 in the tiebreaker. Round 7 turns the difficulty knob even more to the right with Earthquake on the Southern Texas Canyon, an intense song by VG Metal artists ThePlasmas. woker-X has created a Challenging level chart that pushes out a ton of streaming and jumpstreaming to follow the active percussion line of the song. While this chart packs a huge punch of difficulty for Division 1, it’s lacking in length. Keep a look out for the three underdogs in the division – akidaki, TheThong and DAMAN4 -all- did better than our round 6 division leader on the tiebreaker, so there’s obviously some potential for this round to be hectic!

Division 2: Disco Balls
Our remaining contenders: i will pwn u, reuben_tate, ghost-, magicturbo, fenderg

Division 2 has had a relatively rough ride since round 5, but our Intermediate division has constantly stepped up to the plate. This round, we have Disco Balls by roop, a borderline Challenging/Very Challenging level file by prolific simfile artist bmah. Last round, Haruka Kanata brought a technical flare to division 2, using short but speedy bursts in an effort to break combo. This time, there’s an increase in density, and some added combo-breaking difficulty by way of jacks. Certain areas of this chart compare to bmah’s previous rage-inducing file, elegante. There are two clear contenders for the top 3 spot – forum favorite reuben_tate has been making an increase in skill that is nothing short of incredible, shocking everyone with a recent run of Jeanie and Caroline that would compare to some Division 4 level players. On the flip side, we have i will pwn u, who has emerged as a divisional leader by pulling a booflag on round 5 and was tied with division favorite reuben_tate on round 6. magicturbo’s strength in this tournament has been subtle in the intermediate division, rivaling i will pwn u’s non-perfect count for the first five rounds (5 goods and a boo for both players!). Will ghost- and fenderg decide to turn up the heat and put pressure on the rest of the party?

Division 3: Determination
Our remaining contenders: rayword45, The_Toymaker, AD4M-V, jgano, supermoe1985

What a fitting song name for the semi-final round of a tournament! Our five semi-finalists will face off on Determination, by AKIMO, the first For Masters Only file in the Advanced division. kommisar brings a relatively familiar feel with this file, highly reminiscent of Brandish Headless’ slow but dense pace with a relatively fast solo in between to give a “break” from the forced jumpy structure. Last round was an intense one, with an EXTREMELY tight cutoff of 1 good and 1 boo set by forum favorite supermoe1985; it looks like you’ll live to tell the story of round 7 in the FFR official tournament! On the other side of the spectrum, rayword45, who was scraping by in the previous rounds decided to bring his A-game and stand out as the only person to get a perfect score on the round 6 song. ThirdStyle regular The_Toymaker also stood strong this round, sitting in second place with AD4M-V by the smallest of margins, with an extra tap added to an otherwise perfect run. As far as the rest of division 3, let’s give everyone eliminated in the 6th round of this tournament a hand for their hard effort – the lowest score in the entire division was two goods! That’s effort, folks.

Division 4: Tsugihagi Construction
Our remaining contenders: YOSHl, yo man im awesome, hi19hi19, DarknessXoXLight, sjoecool1991 v2

Without a doubt, Division 4 has been getting battered in this tournament. Just when they all thought they were finally getting a break with Colorful Course, they got slapped hard in the face with Mermaid Island. At this stage of the tournament, there ARE no easy files. Tsugihagi Construction by t+pazolite with Ziergdsx18‘s steps pushes the Expert division into the realm of the For Gurus Only area. Similar to Division 5′s Magical Higan Tour 2009 chart, Tsugihagi Construction is a very demanding chart, forcing players to handle bursts of 250 BPM 16ths, tangled within jumps and away from some fast 32nd bursts. Speed and density are huge challenges in this file. YOSHl absolutely slammed the competition on Mermaid Island, using his jack and trill strengths to achieve a 1 good and 1 average score, a score that would remain on the top 10 of the song’s leaderboards for a good majority of the round. Let’s not overshadow the other two players who did extremely well this round – hi19hi19, who is still alive and journeying into the familiar For Gurus Only territory, an area of the game that he has proven to be strong at, and yo man im awesome, who is gaining a bit of accuracy and control on higher level files. sjoecool1991 v2′s scores indicate that he’s packing quite a bit of skill behind him, and DarknessXoXLight, while a forum favorite, is only scraping by this round.

Division 5: Pandora
Our remaining contenders: MikeShinoda12345, Coolboyrulez0, Stage:, justin_ator, Choofers

A semi-final round, named Pandora? If you don’t think it means trouble, you probably should try to remember the power of Pandora’s box. Pandora by Kkrusty is a For Gurus Only file by _.Spitfire._ that starts off with a really slow pace but breaks out nothing short of hell itself, busting out a 250 BPM section filled with violent jumpstream, short 32nd bursts, some 24th bursts within jumps, and an unrelenting density. Round 6′s Indo No Sobaya, while deemed easier than round 5′s Magical Higan Tour, managed to keep the round AAA-less. MikeShinoda12345 took charge of the division with a two good run on the song, holding everyone else, including round 5 leader and favorite Stage: at bay. While these two have been mentioned quite a bit in the forums, we can’t forget about the other three players in the division. Choofers, who was sitting in the lowest position at the end of Round 6, is close to multiple For Gurus Only AAAs, and also packs a ton of speed, something that is not only tested, but also demanded for this round. Coolboyrulez0 and justin_ator have sat under the radar for the past few rounds, and with only one more round to go, it’s either now or never to try and shine.

Division 6: Husigi Usagi Milk Tei
Our remaining contenders: DossarLX ODI, leonid, TC_Halogen, samurai7694, Xayphon

The Guru division cage has dropped to five remaining players, and it truly has become a battle of the titans. This round’s song is Husigi Usagi Milk Tei by Yuuyu, a brutal For Gurus Only file created by jimerax that throws absolutely EVERYTHING possible in an effort to stop a full combo. From fast bursts, to straight trilling, to jacks, to huge roll walls and dense jumpstream, there isn’t a truly dominant structure in this file for anyone to destroy. Two of the five remaining players still have a perfect tournament score – DossarLX ODI and TC_Halogen, with samurai7694 having a cumulative score of one good, leonid with two, and Xayphon having a jumbled mess of 1-1-0-2 for a cumulative score. With all five players being near perfection for the entire tournament, this is anyone’s game. With a file this brutal, surely AAA streaks should be put to a halt here.

Whoo boy. One more round and this thing is all over. It went by so quickly.

Christmas Event Day12 ~Cross-event with Thirdstyle~

Posted in Flash Flash Revolution on December 25th, 201111 Comments »

Merry Christmas! And This is the final day of this event.
Okay, the big news for today: All StylePoint gains are doubled. I know you’ll want to get playing pretty quickly to take advantage of this, so I’ll briefly describe today’s releases.
A gift for you... enjoy!
The Air I Breathe, a simultaneously gentle and rough rock/screamo song by Our Last Night, is stepped by Nocturne. You might notice the file is not a constant BPM, but at the same time it doesn’t try to shove gimmicks down your throat.

Play The Air I Breathe!

Aquazar Destroys The Plastic World is from a common name here on ThirdStyle, odaxelagnia, and it sounds as much like a walking mass of samples as Freaking Club Music. In fact, even the charts by Housekeeper seem similar. Whatever, it’s all fun.

Play Aquazar Destroys The Plastic World!

A gift for you... enjoy!
Carol Of The Bells…hmm, this sounds strikingly familiar too! That aside, this version done by August Burns Red has actual bells which build into a powerful rock/metal melody with a kick. Stepped by DrTran.

Play Carol Of The Bells (again)!

Jingle Bells Speedcore is exactly as it says – it’s a certain familiar tune with a fresh, fast kick injected by SD-501. The chart stepped by Jonny is also festive, containing only red, green and white notes!

Play Jingle Bells Speedcore!

Enjoy your time!

Christmas Event Day11 ~Cross-event with Thirdstyle~

Posted in Flash Flash Revolution on December 24th, 201132 Comments »

The last day of FFR releases...And so we arrive at Day 11 of the FFR and ThirdStyle event, the last day of event releases on FFR. Everyone excited? Well you should be, because we have FOUR files for you today!

Where Are You Christmas by The Piano Guys (iironiic) – Classical (Piano Ensemble) / Tricky / 3:53
Rain by YMCK (Kommisar) – Secret [48,000 credits] (Cutie 8-bit Pop) / For Guru’s Only / 5:05

Where Are You Christmas is a beautiful song from YouTube sensations The Piano Guys, with masterfully synced steps provided by iironiic. The song is a cover of an old favorite recorded by Faith Hill, but still retains all the magic the original inspires. Hopefully as you sit and play this file, the tune puts you in a wistful Christmas mood!
The song Rain has spawned some notoriously hard charts for Stepmania, and Kommisar’s steps for FFR certainly don’t disappoint either when it comes to difficulty. The lengthy chart features a little of everything, with some fast and relentless streams, some dense 16th jump sections, a handful of tricky polyrhythms… oh and those trills that Rain files tend to be infamous for. Definitely not a file for the faint of fingers!

Rudi the Techno Pioneer by Chevron (hi19hi19) – Skill-Token (Raggacore) / For Masters Only / 3:09
Requirement: Full Combo Nedeleg Laouen! with 2 or less goods

This file is an extremely unique take on the classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer tune… and maybe some other Christmas classics mashed in there too. Score some solid accuracy on the recently released Purchased file Nedeleg Laouen! and Rudi can be yours to play forever.

Piano Etude (Demon Fire) [Oni] by OSTER Project (who_cares973) – Skill-Token (Piano Solo) / For Guru’s Only / 3:17
Requirement: Get 1224 Combo and pass on Piano Etude (Demon Fire) [Heavy]

Piano Etude (Demon Fire) [Oni] is… a challenge. By showing you can combo the already rather difficult public chart for this song, you can unlock this masterpiece stepped by wc. Not only does it have much more accurate sync than the public chart, it also steps far more of the sounds in the song, making it extremely difficult. For all those who have been wanting another intense classical chart, please enjoy!

And finally, a somewhat personal message from me:
I think around this time is a good opportunity to reflect on what is truly valuable to us. Regardless of race, religion, or ideals, everyone can use a little time to step back and appreciate life. As you spend time with family, friends, or even just forever alone, try your best to spread some happiness. Even as we indulge a little around this time in modern consumer culture, it’s important to keep in mind that the smallest of kind actions can make the biggest of impacts.

We hope you have enjoyed all your FFResents throughout this event.
The event will culminate with day twelve tomorrow on ThirdStyle.
That’s it for this update. Happy Holidays, and as always, enjoy your arrow smashing!

It’s day 10! That means we’ve hit the double digits, and the day everyone’s been waiting for is now close at hand.
A gift for you... enjoy!
Yesterday FFR didn’t stop at 2, but gave us a triple release, including a brand new Skill Token to unlock! Today, ThirdStyle is having its own triple release day. That’s right, three new songs for players of any skill level to enjoy. So, first up is the second appearance of the Renard alias Kitsune^2 on ThirdStyle, a chiptune/8bit song called The Steel Monster Above The City. This level is impressively tough; chart artist Halogen- described the Hard file as “the most technically difficult chart I’ve played on TS.” And Medium isn’t too simple, either, with tricky minijacks and fast 24th streams peppered throughout. But whatever, go play.

Play The Steel Monster Above The City and other Renard songs on ThirdStyle!

The second offering today is from another inactive stepper come alive, Patashu. He’s bringing another Christmas-related song to the party with Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence. This song is by sasakure.UK, who focuses on Vocaloid and remix work. Of course we’ll take anything holiday related, and the song even sounds great too!

Play Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence!

(And yes, we do know grammar; punctuation tends to mess up the score processing, though.)
A gift for you... enjoy!

And finally – wow, we’re just resurrecting everyone this winter, aren’t we? DrTran is back in town with Deck The Halls. Yep, it’s another themed song! Enjoy this happy-hardcore holiday tune by Newgrounds user ActionHobo.

Play Deck The Halls!

Enjoy these 3 songs on Thirdstyle!

I’m going to pre-empt things here with a bit of a sweetener! I set up a little scavenger hunt for you all to go looking in the depths of ThirdStyle. I can give you two hints; after that, the rest is up to you. Do note that this might require some off-site research. This is a one-day contest, and the reward is StylePoints…many of them.

The hints:
1. Start at the root.
2. A key may help you.

Christmas Event Day9 ~Cross-event with Thirdstyle~

Posted in Flash Flash Revolution on December 22nd, 201118 Comments »

Presents!Well, we are now nine days into the FFR and ThirdStyle event, and we’re bumping it up a notch by bringing you three new files today. The more the merrier, right?

bossa nova of december by katoh (bmah) – Funk (Bossa Nova) / Very Difficult / 2:27
Try To Star by S.S.H. (Rebirth0) – Arcade (Retro Rock) / Very Challenging / 2:32

bossa nova of december brings us another file from bmah, with fun syncopated guitar melodies and some nice slow polyrhythmic sections too. For our second release we have Try To Star, a file from old veteran FFR simfile artist Rebirth, with music from standby music artist S.S.H. Hopefully this combo gives you FFR veterans a nice nostalgic feeling!

A Correspondances Illumitees by Aliceffekt (nois-or-e) – Skill-Token (IDM) / Very Challenging / 1:10
Requirement: Pass Elektrik Shiivers with 2 or less boos.

This skill token tests your ability to accurately hit arrows- no mashing allowed! However, the result is definitely worth it, unlocking this short but action-packed file courtesy of nois-or-e.

Also, in the spirit of holiday giving, the FREEDOM DiVE token has been awarded to the top 12 players in each division of the official tournament. If you have received the token thanks to this but haven’t yet realized it, be sure to give the level a try. More ways to earn this token are sure to pop up in the future!

In a bit of extra news… with the addition of seven files yesterday for the Official Tournament, FFR reached  over 1000 public files! A nice milestone for sure- here’s to a thousand more files to enjoy over the upcoming years.

We hope you enjoy these new releases! The event continues with day ten on ThirdStyle tomorrow.
That’s it for this update. Enjoy your arrow smashing!

Posted in Flash Flash Revolution on December 21st, 201117 Comments »

Wow, it’s already Day 8! Yesterday, FFR did double release, which you can discuss on FFR here or TS here.
A gift for you... enjoy!
Today Thirdstyle has a double release for you as well. The first song comes from a simfiler that came out of hiding just for this special event. Zero gives us some nice charts for Chemical Blip, a chiptune remix of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 by Anti-Syne.

According to Anti-Syne, “So this ReMix was a bit of a wonderful accident. It started life as an original track, until whilst playing round with it I accidentally played those first two chords of Chemical Plant Zone. Out of curiosity I played the Chemical melody into my original and it just seemed to work.” Check out his OCRemix profile if you want more!

Play Chemical Blip on ThirdStyle!

Here are the previous levels, just in case you are just joining in on the FFR/TS 12 Days of Xmas Event:
Day1 – Reality Hits You Hard Bro by The Gregory Brothers (DossarLX ODI)
Day2 – Cirno’s Perfect Math Class by IOSYS OS (Nocturne)
Day3 – Submission Rules by MarioNintendo (MarioNintendo)

A gift for you... enjoy!
Christmas eve is getting closer, so we decided to put all of you guys in the holiday mood with a special song that will bring out some good ‘ole Christmas memories!
Christmas Time Is Here, a 1:53 ukulele track from Sodaphon is quite the unique addition from our very own news writer kisler! The charts should provide a decent challenge with fun gallopy 12ths and vocal rhythms mixed in. Visit Sodaphon’s SoundCloud here if you want to hear more from them.

Play Christmas Time is Here on ThirdStyle!

Also, give a shoutout to Nocturne and Heronius for a VERY quick turnaround on in-game backgrounds for the songs.

Thanks for playing, and stay tuned for tomorrow’s release from FFR!
