Yeeaah, the first week of the tournament will coincide exactly with the days I am in London, so I won’t be home to play the song. I’ll still sign up though and hope I can AAA the first song at like one of Anwar’s friends’ places or something.

It’s all automated as soon as you play the song. There will be an announcement on the front page telling you what song to play and you just play it and as long as it records on the site it’ll record for the tournament. In these tournament, a certain number of people get eliminated based on how well they did, and you’ll be able to see the cut-off point on a page that’ll be posted in an announcement sometime (probably when divisions are up). Just have to be over that line and you’ll go to next round. There’ll be a whole announcement about how it works

Well, I honestly have a problem with not being a D7. Low d6 can’t get a fgo, but have some unfixable flags. High d6 are getting fso to their names.
The skill gap is monstruous. Either fix this or even it by spreading to the other divisions…
Because right now for low D6 its like placing a D1 in D4 and watch hike struggle with absolutely no chance of success.

Unless there is a separate category for each and every player in the tournament, there’s going to be “a big gap” between the top and bottom people. You think even in D1 or D2 everybody has an equal chance to win? The people who get stuck in the bottom of D6 and are positive they can’t win against the top D6 people are in the exact same boat as people at the bottom of EVERY DIVISION.
It’s not that it’s unfair for you to be at the bottom of D6. It’s that if FFR had any reasonable way to do qualifiers or hold an invitational based on skill and ability, you wouldn’t even make it in at all. (Nor would I)

The gap between lower D1 and high D1 is no where near the gap between lower D6 and high D6. I don’t have an FGO AAA, and I’m pretty sure I’m going to be D6. There are plenty of people around my skill level (low D6) that have to play against the top players such as Dossar, samurai, Halogen, leonid, dynamo. I know a tournament is supposed to be fun and all, but I think it’d be much more fun if, you know, you’re not being slaughtered within the first two rounds.

I think I’ll insert my sob story of being placed in Masters of the 4th official with only two FMO AAAs (at the time) and still making it to 5th place (technically, 4th since Shash couldn’t win prizes). A lot of D6 has the capability of pushing to ridiculous levels – it just takes a little bit of optimization. Honestly, I’m tired of the divisions being added on — the very first official tournament on FFR had THREE divisions. How about we all play that way?

Also, another comment about the 4th official – there were some people in Masters division with no FMO AAAs, and there were some with multiple FGO AAAs. At least the issue in question is still negligibly within one difficulty level…

@Choof: I’d still say that D1 has a sizable skill gap between the top and bottom of the division. I mean you’re gonna have people that can AAA 7′s and such and at the bottom of the division you might have some people that can’t even pass Power. lol

I really don’t think some people realize how big the D6 gap is compared to every other division lmao. Most members can go from passing the easiest files to AAAing 7s within their first few months of playing, but it can take several years to go from AAAing low FGOs to high FGOs, perhaps longer.
But eh, low D6 always gets boned every year, why should this year be any different (sun)

Lol, I wasn’t advocating splitting or not splitting D6, I was just pointing out how D1 is also hilariously spread out. Although I’d rather have D6 split than D1, there is lots of room for improvement in D1, but for the people in D6, most people there have already reached their plateau and it takes much more effort to improve even the tiniest bit.

1. FGO is now an old term for “For Gurus Only” which was the second highest difficulty. Each difficulty has been given its own name. “AAA” simply means that a player has gotten all perfects in a song (i.e. the best score you can achieve for any given song).
2. Yes, each division plays different songs independent from other divisions. They’re also new songs that have not yet been released.
3. The difficulty of these songs roughly correlate to the skill level of the division you’re put in. Don’t worry – you’ll be placed in the most appropriate division that suits your skill level.

What Ben said. People in divisions 1-5 can eventually push it. But no way in hell someone who has 10k plays on Lolo with only a booflag can suddenly AAA Winterwind Etude within 2 months. I’m sorry, just no.
Besides, depending on How many elite join, there could easily be a 20 people club totally setting themselves appart from the rest of D6…

I think the raw skill gaps in lower divisions are obviously bigger but it is also much easier to close said gaps. Not sure how many people will be in D6 but I’m definitely not gonna be in the top 10 for this thing you can count on that

@alloyus I wouldn’t call the R62 engine better because I do better on Legacy engine than it when I need the Beatmania skin to get any good scores since I play Velocity engine. I agree there should still be another public engine people can use though, although R^2 was never even finished and it will be quite some time before R^3 is finished.

Some people do do better on R^2 engine. If even ONE person is able to use it and do better who’s in the tournament, then it should be available to everyone, even if it’s just for the duration of the tournament (which would be pretty dumb to me, if it gets released for the tournament then it should be released forever, but that’d be better than giving some players an advantage).

How are people divided into the divisions? I got really lucky one day and AAA’d AAA, which is waaaay harder than any other song that I’ve AAA’d to date. Is that single song going to put me into a harder division?

People are put into their divisions by their scores, assessed by the inspection of your level rank statistics. Certain songs may serve as a benchmark for certain difficulties, so basically your performance on various songs will determine your placement.
No, you’re not likely to be placed in a higher division solely due to one song, but it’ll sure be noticed.
There are more technicalities to determining placements, but I don’t know them all. I’m sure there are a lot of factors.

@saxrunner good question. It takes me at least an hour of playing ffr to fully warm up. I go from struggling on a 9 to playing demon beast appearance with 75 goods. So I probably started out with the songs of the week, fc’d star wars and moved on. But when demon beast came out, I had to be really warmed up to play it since it was an 11 so that’s why I played it so much more accurately.
Is this normal to need to warm up for so long?

Warming up time varies from person to person. And even then, may vary day to day. But each round of the tournament is a week long, so you’ll have your chances to make out your best performances.
