6th Official FFR Tournament: Results!

Posted in Flash Flash Revolution on January 11th, 2012

The tournament is over! After eight weeks, we finally have declared our champions in each division of the tournament.

All first place winners, send a message to who_cares973 about a prize from him:

The song can be any song of your choice – there are no restrictions as to what the song can be or the length of the song. I am able to cut the song at my own discretion if I feel that the song is too long for the file (e.g. the song is 12 minutes long and the interesting part is in the middle 2 minutes). If you know specifically what part of a song you want to be stepped, please let me know or else I will chose my own cut. The difficulty of the file can be suggested, but if the difficulty suggested doesn’t match the song, then it will be brought to your attention.

Also, all first place winners should take a look at Choofers’ thread, as he has promised to make you an “OP” (opening theme). Take a look at this thread for more details on this prize.

Onto the results!

Division 1:
takumi000 – 1st place
DAMAN4 – 2nd place
Escha – 3rd place
akidaki – 4th place
TheThong – 5th place

Our first place winner takumi000 came a long way in this tournament, trailing in comparison to the rest of the pack for the first four rounds of the tournament. Somewhere along the way, he caught his stride as a player. Practice had finally made perfect – or, perhaps he was able to run down a long streak of luck. In any case, his tournament performance in the last half was very strong, sitting at the top of the pack for the last half of the tournament. Escha put on a serious fight during the round 6 tiebreaker of Eclipse, beating our champion in the round. takumi000 traded blows with DAMAN4 on the final round, grappling for position, but finally sealed the deal, rightfully claiming his first place prize. Well deserved win, takumi000, congratulations!

Division 2:
fenderg – 1st place
reuben_tate – 2nd place
magicturbo – 3rd place
ghost- – 4th place
i will pwn u – 5th place

After reuben_tate’s not-quite-SDG run on Jeanie and Caroline, many people thought that he had it in the bag; the Official Tournament predictions thread showed that same trend. Aside from a minor hiccup on Sunless Daybreak, it seemed like he was going to run strong straight to the finish. The intermediate division proved something to be true: expect the unexpected. Both ghost- and i will pwn u were looking strong on their round 7 songs, when they were both trumped in the last hours of the tournament by our 1st and 3rd place finishers, fenderg and magicturbo. In the final round, reuben_tate came off to an early lead, and fenderg responded back. After a bit of trading off, fenderg managed to hold the D2 favorite off. Congratulations, fenderg!

Division 3:
rayword45 – 1st place
AD4M-V – 2nd place
jgano – 3rd place
supermoe1985 – 4th place
The_Toymaker – 5th place

Division 3 never seem to have a clear-cut favorite. supermoe1985 was a favorite by a few forum members – others have had TS regular The_Toymaker out in the front lines. Later down the line, AD4M-V was mentioned as a favorite with his constant comebacks and clinches in danger. No one seemed to believe in rayword45 and jgano, until the last three rounds, where it really counted. rayword exploded out of the gates on round 6, being the only person to snag a perfect score on the round and securing a position to the top 5. In the round of 5, rayword, AD4M-V, and jgano really turned up the heat and showed everyone what they were made of, pumping out lower-end single digit goods. The final round was one to keep an eye on though, as position continued to switch back and forth. None of the players started off well, posting scores lacking a full combo. jgano was the first to break through and full combo the song, with a halfway decent good count. AD4M-V pushed past jgano, forcing him to improve once more. After trading a few blows, it looked like AD4M-V was going to take down the tournament with a sub-25 good run. rayword45 then came out of the shadows, and stuck it right to AD4M-V, beating him by 3 goods to take the tournament down for good. Our Division 3 champion had this to say after achieving his winning run: “Just to tell you, reading will save your life. I skipped the gym to read my ELA book, so my mom left and I decided to give the song a non-serious run. Which turned serious.”

Division 4:
YOSHl – 1st place
yo man im awesome – 2nd place
DarknessXoXLight – 3rd place
sjoecool1991 v2 – 4th place
hi19hi19 – 5th place

The Expert division generated a ton of attention. With three very well known female players in the mix, a hi19hi19 who was getting ridiculously low single digit good runs on his own FGO file, CammyGoesRawr, a huge underdog, and a few others who felt like they were (initially) poorly placed, like YOSHl, who had this to say about his placement “lol D4…*stands no chance*”, D4 was one division that many people had their eyes on. Right at the start, hi19hi19 was subtly complained about in certain areas of the site due to the constant barrage of strong FMO and FGO scores. No action was taken on his placement, and the tournament progressed with our top 5 constantly trading position on many songs. Just when everyone thought DarknessXoXLight was down and out for the count, she’d come back and claw her way into safety, and through to the next round. sjoecool1991 v2 and yo man im awesome showed some great improvement in consistency through their tournament scores and/or level ranks as well. One competitor came out in a blaze of glory in this competition. YOSHl, who was a huge underdog, is the biggest proof that the official tournament can bring out the best out of a player. Racking up 2,069 plays over the course of the tournament, YOSHl fought on every round until he got the score that he needed to survive, or, in the case of the last three rounds, the score that he desired. But no one could have predicted the score that YOSHl pulled out at the last hour of the final round; if there were any way to seal the deal, this would be the way to do it. Congratulations, YOSHl – you truly, truly deserve it.

Division 5:
Choofers – 1st place
Stage: – 2nd place
MikeShinoda12345 – 3rd place
justin_ator – 4th place
Coolboyrulez0 – 5th place

Our new Master division (in the context of there being a sixth division) had a pretty rocky line-up, with the difficulties pushing up and down as the rounds went on. Stage: made an impressive appearance to those who weren’t aware of his presence by posting a Jamais Deux missflag (perfection with a miss…what a shame). His tournament presence was just as powerful, keeping a relatively strong composure throughout the entire competition by maintaining single digit good scores or better up until the final round. Seasoned StepMania player Choofers also had a very strong run through the tournament, managing the same feat as Stage: did, keeping his scores to a single digit good or better for the first seven rounds. Our third place finisher, MikeShinoda12345, was relatively quiet and unmentioned throughout the tournament, but he trudged through the tournament with very solid scores, including an impressive round 7 score that would push him into the safe spot along with Stage:, and put Choofers right above the line with justin_ator and Coolboyrulez0 fighting to improve. Come round 8, Choofers immediately exploded out of the gates with a tournament-winning 15 good run on one of the most technical For Gurus Only files to date. Check out some replay footage here, or, take a look at the run caught on video here. Great job Choofers!

Division 6:
DossarLX ODI – 1st place
samurai7694 – 2nd place
leonid – 3rd place
TC_Halogen – 4th place
Xayphon – 5th place

And last but not least, we get down to the Guru division. A sixth division was added this time around in an effort to accommodate for not only a wide skill gap, but also to account for the amount of skill this division had. In previous tournaments, a few level For Masters Only AAAs would drag you into the Masters division. This time, you had to be very near a For Gurus Only AAA (or physically own one to your name) to qualify for this division. The predictions of the winner this year were unanimous – some going as far as saying that they should hand him the prize simply for entering. While the predictions did pan out correctly, and DossarLX ODI did win the tournament, it is very worthwhile to mention the other players who did something notable. Our second place finisher, samurai7694, beat out TC_Halogen on a round 7 tiebreaker to put up a ridiculous fight on the lunacy known as Rave7, ending the round with a single good. Our third place finisher, leonid, after constantly mentioning that he would not make it deep into the tournament, managed to fight hard enough to secure a position in the finals. Our 4th place finisher, TC_Halogen, managed to hold a perfect score through the first six out of eight songs, and our 5th place finisher, Xayphon, managed to hold a perfect score through the first five rounds. Congratulations to DossarLX ODI for doing what we all expected, and a second set of congratulations to samurai7694 for putting on one of the greatest fights in FFR official tournament history – you definitely kept everyone on the edge of their seats, and no spectator can ask more of you than that.

Special thanks goes out to all of the simfile artists who made this tournament possible with their content! Without your help, this tournament wouldn’t have all new songs! Thank you guys so much!
