What Were You Fighting For? Posted on: January 31, 2009, at 06:33:25pm He says they are the enemy To kill is why we’re here, But does that justify the pain From the ones they once held dear? When the letter comes in the mail, When the knock comes at the door, Do you know their loved ones are crying? And kneeling on the floor, And praying old, forgotten prayers You’ve never heard before? You killed as if nothing mattered There was no right, no wrong, Everything your drill sergeant said, You simply went along. How could his words, so cold and dead, Make right what you just did? How could you raise your gun and shoot away, While mothers and children hid? Did you ever imagine you could do A thing like this before? And when you kill, where is the voice asking, “What were you fighting for?” |
